Design for Peace

This proposal is part of DESIGN FOR PEACE, an initiative by the National Council of Architects of Italy (CNAPPC) under the patronage of the Order of Architects of Rome, the Department of Youth Policies, and the Embassy of Ukraine in Italy. The project involves five Italian design studios working on the reconstruction of specific areas in Ukraine.

The city of the future transcends mere urban planning and iconic architecture. It fosters imagination and provides vibrant social spaces where people can connect and share ideas. In European cities, as in most urban landscapes, streets act as the network, the boundary between public life and private spheres. Building facades, therefore, become a dialogue with the surroundings, defining the urban aesthetic.

When redesigning a historically significant building, transgression should be avoided. Instead, variations on the original theme, adhering to the site’s unwritten DNA, are essential. With this in mind, the proposal maintains the existing street facades, ensuring continuity and harmony with the environment. Necessary reconstructions will restore the building’s historical identity.

The concept is a powerful reinterpretation. The New Kharkiv National University of Economics, using the existing building as a foundation, is envisioned as a central hub attracting students, researchers, and the Kharkiv community. The educational programs offered will be complemented by cultural events in public access areas.

The massive structure will seem to defy gravity, incorporating vantage points that appear separate from its base, drawing visitors in. The design eliminates unnecessary elements, including the base, creating a completely new perspective. This opens up a covered plaza housing public services like the main foyer, library, study corners, a cafe, and a small restaurant. The auditorium and its garden are located on the top floor. The prominent stairs serve as the main entrance and public access point.

The adjoining park and semi-private garden courtyard allow public use of essential ground-level services even when the educational areas are closed. New layouts and additional external storeys will be implemented above the main level, ensuring functional, clean, and flexible internal spaces. Plans include classrooms of various sizes with movable partitions, administrative offices, research spaces, meeting rooms, study areas, leisure areas, and a dedicated faculty zone.

The rooftop, another highlight, becomes a social gathering place, fostering community and strengthening relationships. The New Kharkiv National University of Economics, named after V.N. Karazin, is designed to be a local and international center for innovative education and research. It aspires to play a strategic role in the city’s future planning.

Given the opportunity, ordinary people can achieve extraordinary things. The New Economics Faculty will be that interactive platform, reshaping the nation’s future and solidifying global connections.
