In the heart of Mantua, an important urban regeneration initiative is transforming the Former Bocciodromo into a youth cultural center dedicated to music and theater. The project, led by Mazzei Architects, represents an exemplary synthesis of contemporary architecture and the city’s historical fabric, with an innovative design aimed at enhancing the site’s identity and providing a new landmark for younger generations.
Currently underway, the intervention is an integral part of the PNRR urban regeneration plan and aims to turn the building into a cultural attraction through careful aesthetic and functional redevelopment. The architectural design of the new facades has been conceived in line with the requirements of the local administration and the community, ensuring seamless integration with the prestigious Parco del Te and the historical surroundings of Piazzale Montelungo.
“Our vision for this project is to create architecture that dialogues with history while looking toward the future,” explains Valerio Mazzei, founder of the firm. “This intervention is a concrete example of how contemporary design can enhance existing heritage, improving both its visual impact and functionality.”
The Mayor of Mantua, Mattia Palazzi, emphasizes the social importance of this new space: “The Former Bocciodromo will become a point of reference for young people, hosting events, concerts, student assemblies, and artistic performances. This project responds to the need for more gathering places and opportunities for young generations to express themselves in a stimulating and inclusive environment.”
The intervention is characterized by an innovative and dynamic aesthetic, achieved through a meticulous selection of materials and construction solutions. The core idea is to balance design and functionality while improving the building’s energy efficiency and sustainability.
Among the key architectural choices, the new metal cladding stands out, featuring a tone similar to corten steel to ensure durability and harmony with the historical surroundings. The facades incorporate architectural metal elements arranged in a carefully studied composition, creating a dynamic effect where closely spaced vertical slats on the north side gradually open towards the south, producing an engaging play of volumes. The lighting design includes concealed LED fixtures integrated within the horizontal slats, enhancing the structure’s presence in the evening with striking light effects. Additionally, great attention has been given to thermal insulation, using extruded polystyrene (XPS) and expanded polystyrene (EPS), combined with a colored lime-based plaster finish, ensuring optimal energy efficiency.
Thus, the architectural design of the facades successfully meets the dual objective of elegance and energy performance, maintaining a modern aesthetic while harmonizing with the urban landscape.
Beyond the aesthetic and structural aspects, the Former Bocciodromo project is designed to be a multifunctional youth gathering space, hosting cultural and artistic events. The goal is to nurture young talent and creativity by offering a versatile and welcoming venue for concerts, theater, workshops, and social events.
Sustainability is another key aspect of the project. Mazzei Architects has selected recyclable materials and innovative construction techniques to minimize the environmental impact of the intervention while improving the building’s energy efficiency.
Currently, the Technical-Economic Feasibility Project is under review by the Superintendency of Archaeology, Fine Arts, and Landscape, with construction already underway and an expected completion date set for Spring 2025. This project, in addition to revitalizing a historic building, marks another step forward in Mantua’s urban regeneration strategy, placing architecture at the service of culture and the community.
