Innovative architectural solutions for steel

During MADE Expo 2023, the Steel Promotion Foundation created a dedicated space to promote sustainability in steel construction.
This event aimed to highlight the crucial role of steel in sustainable construction.
The ‘I’M STEEL HERE‘ campaign aims to spread awareness about the importance of the material, emphasising its durability, versatility and recyclability.
It promotes a culture of responsible building, emphasising the circular economy and the need for clear information on sustainability in the construction sector.

With innovation and education, the aim is to guide the transition to a future marked by the circular economy.
Special guest architect Patricia Viel, CEO and Partner of ACPV ARCHITECTS, as testimonial of the ‘I’M STEEL HERE’ campaign.
The presence of Patricia Viel, renowned architect, added authority to the cause, highlighting the key role of steel in design and material choices.

During an interview with editor Simona Finessi, architect Viel made some very interesting remarks on the subject.

Architecture, which has always been linked to construction technology, finds in the synthesis between structural marvel and architectural language the quality of the project”, explains architect Viel. ”In Italy, with an ancient steel-making tradition, steel has been partly neglected. Today, architectural design goes beyond the geometric aspect, considering environmental, social and economic impacts. Beauty, understood as ‘quality of life’, is manifested not only in the final result, but in the entire life cycle of the building. Building flexibility and the ability to adapt become crucial, and steel is presented as an essential tool for deconstruction and recycling. This approach requires deep collaboration between architects and engineers, with the aim of improving the quality of buildings as living systems. The choice of steel becomes an integral part of the design strategy, in tune with the reduction of emissions and consumption. The use of recyclable materials, such as 100 per cent steel, becomes an unavoidable necessity. Learning to design with steel is a cultural choice, a rediscovery of the ability to produce languages through construction methods. Architects must regain pride in integrating steel technology into design, not only for the practical benefits but also for the linguistic potential it offers. Reconstructing the value and sense of future of this material is essential for architecture, engineering and the construction industry”.
