In Szeged, Hungary, a truly unique building has recently been constructed: the Tiszavirág swimming pool, an indoor sports pool that, in addition to being a suitable place for sports, also offers space for leisure and recreation. The new complex is truly impressive and includes an Olympic-size swimming pool, used for international and national competitions, measuring 50 by 25 metres with 10 lanes and covering a net area of 13,300 square metres. Spectators can watch the competitions from the stands, which accommodate around 1,200 people.
The building was designed by TSPC Group, a leading engineering company in Hungary, which paid particular attention to the use of natural lighting, which filters in from above and from the large glazed side walls to illuminate the main pool.
To support this, a complex and innovative artificial lighting system was installed consisting of 108 SQUARE PRO GLASS professional floodlights for sports areas by Performance in Lighting, totally integrated into the false ceiling, which provide glare-free lighting. The installations for this type of sports building must in fact guarantee maximum visual comfort for athletes, spectators in the stands and must also be suitable for filming for live television broadcasts.
The use of LED light sources for all luminaires also helps to reduce operating costs and achieve considerable savings in energy management.
In addition to the main swimming pool, the sports complex features everything a modern meeting place can offer, including a 25 by 15 metre 6-lane warm-up pool and a 20 by 12.5 metre training pool, as well as a partly indoor and partly outdoor relaxation pool. The building also has a conference room, association offices, a children’s centre, a study room, business premises, canteens and a wellness department.
The complex offers various solutions aimed at creating a sustainable environment: 320 new trees have been planted in the area, 750 solar panels have been installed on the roof of the building and purified water from the swimming pool is used, which is recycled together with rainwater to irrigate the surrounding green areas and green roofs.
The design of the building required special attention from the designers and consultants, in particular attention was paid to the oblique walls and the mechanical and electrical installations. The use of a 3D BIM model was an excellent tool to present the building to the client and to refine it, optimising the design time by doing all the necessary checks involving the various actors involved from the initial stages.
The facility was built as part of the Modern Cities Programme and complies with all regulations of the FINA and LEN swimming bodies and will in the future strengthen water polo in Szeged, which is already an important bastion of the Hungarian sports scene. The Tiszavirág swimming pool represents not only an ideal sports centre for swimming and water polo but also for recreational activities for the benefit of the community.
